Anakinra Injection was initially approved by FDA in November 2001 for treatment of moderate to severe active rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, anakinra was approved in January 2013 for treatment of a severe form of Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS), known as Neonatal-Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (NOMID).

What is Anakinra Injection used for?
Anakinra Injection comes as a solution to inject subcutaneously (under the skin). It is usually given once a day. However, when anakinra is given to treat neonatal-onset multisystem inflammatory disease, it may given once or twice daily.

STORAGE AND HANDLING
It should be stored in a refrigerator.
Discard any syringe that has been left out of the refrigerator for more than 12 hours.
DOSAGE
The recommended dose of Kineret for the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis is 100 mg/day administered daily by subcutaneous injection. Higher doses did not result in a higher response. The dose should be administered at approximately the same time every day.
SIDE EFFECTS
Anakinra may cause serious side effects including: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, abnormal liver function tests, chest pain, new or a worsening irregular heartbeats pattern, nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Genetic testing should be indicated in order to detect whether a person is at higher risk of developing hypersensitivity.
Anakinra may not be added as a single agent when antiretroviral regimens are changed because of loss of the virologic response.
Patients with liver disease should be watchful and cautious in order to Anakinra because it can aggravate the condition.
In patients with Anakinra, conditions like immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome, a change in body fat as well as an increased risk of heart attack may occur.
Anakinra is not recommended for use in infants who are under 3 months of age.
