Mitotane is a chemotherapy drug which is classified as an antineoplastic medication. Recommended for the treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma, Mitotane is known by its trade name Lysodren. It is known to be a steroidogenesis inhibitor which is also indicated to treat patients with Cushing's syndrome. It is important to be noted that it’s an off-label indication. But, the orphan drug status provides necessary justification for prescribing Lysodren. Mitotane in India is not commercially available and the same has been imported by many patients.

Lysodren 500mg tablets are available in a pack of 100 tablets. The dosage recommendations vary from one patient to another. However, the normal trend is an adult patient may require three to six tablets in a day, even more in some cases. This has to be the discretion of the treating physician. This drug was developed and initially promoted by Bristol Myers Squibb. This is one of the oldest approvals by FDA
among the medications on demand and yet to be available in India. FDA has approved Mitotane in 1970 and EMA has given its orphan drug designation and approval in 2004. The demand for this drug is reportedly due to low production of volumes. But, this can be procured through official channels of import.

Lysodren in India is prescribed by Oncologists who treat adrenocortical carcinoma. Neurosurgeons, Otolaryngological surgeons and Endocrinologists who treat Cushing's syndrome also advise for Mitotane in India. Patients who are on this medication are required to take it for longer durations.
